EAST LANSING, Mich. -- J.P. Tokoto had 12 points and a career-high 10 rebounds to help North Carolina beat No. 1 Michigan State 79-65 Wednesday night, giving the Tar Heels another impressive victory in their inconsistent season. The Tar Heels (5-2) have been talented enough to defeat the top-ranked Spartans and then-No. 3 Louisville this season, but theyve also lost to Belmont and UAB. "You cant tell in college basketball whats going to happen," North Carolina coach Roy Williams said. "At one point, we had three freshmen, a sophomore and a junior on the court." Michigan State (7-1) fell to an unranked nonconference team at home for the first time in more than a decade. The Tar Heels took control from the start, never trailed and used a 12-1 run to take a 65-52 lead with 6:02 left. "Michigan State did not want it that much more than we did," Williams said. Kennedy Meeks scored 15 points for North Carolina and Brice Johnson had 14. Marcus Paige and Nate Britt added 13 apiece. Gary Harris had 17 points and Keith Appling scored 13, but both Michigan State guards missed 10 of 15 shots. Adreian Payne had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Spartans, whose last loss at home against an unranked nonconference team was Toledo on Dec. 30, 2002. The Tar Heels beat a No. 1 team for the first time since March 4, 2006, at Duke, and they have a nation-high 13 wins over top-ranked teams. Theyve won seven straight against the Spartans, including in the 2009 NCAA final. Tokoto has taken advantage of an expanded role while P.J. Hairston and Leslie McDonald sit out because of NCAA eligibility concerns. The 6-foot-5 Tokoto, who is from Wisconsin, made some friends and family members in the stands at the Breslin Center happy while green-and-white clad fans didnt have much to get excited about. Tokoto blocked a shot early in the second half, got to a loose ball and threw it to Appling -- while the Spartans player was standing out of bounds -- and made three straight shots later in the half to help the Tar Heels pull away. "J.P. was really active," Williams said. "He did a lot of things." Michigan State pulled into a 32-all tie at halftime after an awful start, struggling to take care of the ball or make shots. The Tar Heels scored the first six points of the game and led 16-4 while holding the Spartans to 1-of-7 shooting with four turnovers. On the bench, North Carolina freshman Isaiah Hicks implored his teammates to keep playing and avoid looking at the scoreboard. The Tar Heels seemed to do that, building a 20-6 lead midway through the first half as Michigan State missed 9 of 11 shots and turned the ball over six times. The Spartans got a scare later in the half when Appling landed hard on his right hip after defending a shot. He hobbled off the court, but was able to return to action before halftime. Michigan State outscored the Tar Heels 13-2 over the last several minutes of the first half. Custom Pittsburgh Pirates Jerseys . -- Tony Finau won the Stonebrae Classic on Sunday for his first Web. Austin Watson, Scott Ford, Filip Forsberg and Mark Van Guilder had the other goals for the Admirals (30-21-12). Scott Darling made 30 saves for his 10th win of the season. Pittsburgh Pirates Shirts .Y. -- The New York Islanders were merely content with a lopsided victory.New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Jaroslav Halaks 27 saves and a dominant second period kept the Islanders the toast of New York, as the current Metropolitan Division leaders dealt the crosstown rival Rangers a 3-0 defeat at Madison Square Garden. Anders Lee, Nikolay Kulemin and Frans Nielsen all lit the lamp during the middle session to help the Islanders close out a season-high seven-game road trip with five wins and remain ahead of Pittsburgh for the division lead. Certainly its going to make a lot of people on Long Island happy (Wednesday) morning, Islanders captain John Tavares said. Were excited about beating them. Obviously theyve been playing well and the top of our division is real tight, so just a big game. The Rangers entered Tuesdays anticipated showdown with victories in 13 of their previous 14 games, but couldnt maintain the momentum as Halak outplayed Henrik Lundqvist and the Isles finished with a 44-27 advantage in shots. We were the slower team, which we havent been in this last stretch, Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh said. We know what makes us successful and we just werent doing it tonight. They were definitely making us look pretty slow out there. Lundqvist was replaced by Cam Talbot at the start of the third period after stopping 29-of-32 chances. The Rangers star netminder was able to withstand an early barrage during the early stages of a second period in which the Islanders controlled from the opening whistle, but Lee finally broke the scoreless deadlock by backhanding through a rebound of Calvin de Haans long drive 8:49 into the stanza. The Islanders then struck twice more in the final 3 1/2 minutes of the frame, with Kulemin extending the lead to 2-0 by ripping a puck that fell to his feet over Lundqvists shoulder while stationed in the slot.dddddddddddd An Islanders penalty late in the period provided the Rangers an opportunity to close the gap. However, Nielsen blocked a pass in his own end on the man advantage, then raced up the right side and fired a wrister under Lundqvists arm for a short-handed tally 40.9 seconds prior to the intermission. We went out in the second and you could see us just getting our game going and starting to wear them down, making them have to defend, said Tavares. Eventually we got rewarded. Talbot made 12 saves in the third period, where Halak faced just six shots to polish off his sixth shutout of the season. Both teams had a few close calls before Lee ended the stalemate. The Islanders had a Matt Martin goal waved off 4:19 into the second period when teammate Casey Cizikas made contact with Lundqvist. The Rangers hit the post three times, including back-to-back attempts from Rick Nash and Derick Brassard just seconds apart, in the first. Game Notes Nielsens goal was the Islanders league-leading seventh in short-handed situations ... The Islanders have prevailed in five of their last six visits to MSG, including a 6-3 triumph on Oct. 14 behind Halaks 40 saves. Lundqvist stopped just 21-of-27 pucks in that matchup ... Rangers forward Martin St. Louis skated in his 1,100th career NHL game, while teammate Marc Staal played in No. 500 ...
